Diabetes Health Fair This Saturday
On occasion we touched on health-related issues, especially when they appear to be directly relevant to the food, foodies, and food culture of our region. You may recall, for example, many posts about nonprofit fundraisers in our community and many recipes/tips for healthier eating. We’d like to share more of those where possible, so your contributions of articles and suggestions are always welcome.
With that in mind and while this particular event is not a fundraiser, the topic that it addresses is of critical importance to many of us. It directly impacts our enjoyment of great food because it emphasizes the need to do so in measured moderation.
Diabetes has touched my family in a big way, as it has many of ours here in the Pee Dee. The disease can run in families, it can ruin individuals’ lives, and it can lead to even more dire consequences if not managed appropriately and diligently. What’s important educationally is for all of us to know how to treat it and how to eat right, and therefore mitigate its effects.
This Saturday, the same day as the South Carolina Pecan Festival (and right down the street), McLeod Regional Medical Center is hosting a DIABETES HEALTH FAIR. If you’re a Diabetic or have a loved one who is, take some time to stop by and pick up some information. Experts will be on hand, so I’m sure it will be worth your time. My wife and I plan to do so.
As a bonus, you can visit with some good foodie friends: Brian & Lindsey Tayara of Our Local Catch. Brian is a Johnson & Wales University College of Culinary Arts graduate, a veteran of the kitchen at Wolfgang Puck’s Spago Beverly Hills, and the recent winner of the Friends of the Florence County Library System’s Books ‘N Boil chef competition. He’s also the leader of the local Slow Food Pee Dee chapter. He’s got skills and, just for you, he’ll be preparing a healthy, sustainable fish dish and giving you the recipe.
Will we see you there? We hope so.
