Valentines Tip: Spooning In The Kitchen

• February 13, 2012

Happy Tuesday! Aren’t you glad Tuesday Tip just happened to fall on Valentines Day? I thought so :) I’m sure everyone has ‘cookin’ on their mind right now, so I’m gonna make this tip exciting by giving some lessons on spooning in the kitchen.

In case you didn’t know, spoons have many uses in the kitchen beyond eating soup and cereal….What?….of course this is about ‘real’ spooning! This is a family blog, ya know!

My favorite tip/trick for using a spoon is to peel  Kiwi. I love Kiwi fruit, and peeling them fast means I can eat lots of ‘em.  Simply slice the ends off, insert the spoon just under the skin (back of the spoon against the skin), and twist it around the fruit. Once the whole skin is loose, the Kiwi pops right out. (With practice, you can hold it over your head and make the fruit fall right in your mouth!)

Cleanly peeled Kiwi

I also love Avocado’s. Sliced with salt & pepper, in quacamole, on a goat cheese pizza…it doesn’t matter, I just like it, so I use a large spoon for it also. Quick and easy:

Morning Snack :)

If you already know these uses, great, but I’ve seen lots of people fumble with kiwi’s and avocado’s, so maybe some will see this as a revelation :)

‘Specialty’ spoons can be multi-tasking as well. For instance: A serrated grapefruit spoon is great for scraping ice to make snow cones or granita, large serving spoons can make functional spatulas for sreading icing, and long, flexible, plastic spoons make great ‘spanking’ spoons…wait, check that…you can’t do that anymore (they say it ruins self-esteem or something).

If you think spoons are kind of boring, try naming at least a dozen different types of spoons! If you can’t, google it and be amazed at how many spoon uses there are!  If you think that’s stupid, you probably shouldn’t be reading a food/cooking blog…lol

Well, it’s Valentines Day and you’ve had your lesson, so grab your honey and get to spooning. Just make sure the kids are in bed!

See ya next week for another Tuesday Tip! :)
