Review: Roger’s Bar-B-Q House

Roger's Bar-B-Q House in Florence

(Florence, SC) Recently our family decided to go to Roger’s Bar-B-Q House. It is one of the favorites in the Pee Dee and regularly wins the “Best of the Pee Dee” reader survey, so expectations were high. As that drill sergeant character on the GEICO commercials suggested, we looked at the full parking lot took that as a good sign.

The interior of the restaurant is simple and comfortable, not unlike other local BBQ places we enjoy. Interestingly, the elephant print wallpaper reminded us more of an Indian restaurant that a BBQ joint, but it ain’t about the decor when you go to Roger’s right?

We entered the line to purchase our buffets and with a quick left turn were in the buffet linen itself. Price for three adult buffets was just under $30.00, including our calculated tip. Not bad for a weekend, we figured. Note that iced tea, sweetened or unsweetened, is included in the price of your meal, but soft drinks are $1.75 each. The tea was good. You know it’s not always easy to find good iced tea.

Sampling from the Buffet Line

Selections were numerous, though some were picked-through as it was well into the lunch hour. The turkey and stuffing were particularly good in my opinion and the pulled pork was tasty, if not a bit peppery for me. The traditional sides like beans, of a few types, were also very good and helped us round out our plate with appropriate amounts of veggies. It’s not a southern buffet without friend chicken, and while we tried it here, it didn’t quite top the fried chicken from another recent review spots. Other items we enjoyed included the BBQ ribs and the ever popular macaroni & cheese. Desserts included soft serve ice cream and banana pudding — not together of course!

Our welcome was very friendly. The table service was pleasant, but not very engaged. We lacked a few things during our meal while waiting for our server to return, including napkins which would have come in handy for the rib sauce. Granted the dining room was pretty full while we were there, so undoubtedly the staff was busy.

Roger's is consistently rated

Not to be contrary to the voting public and because each person is entitled to his or her opinion, we discussed it and would rate Roger’s Bar-B-Q House with a “one gas pump” rating on our unique restaurant rating scale. It’s good and that’s adequate given our recent experience. Will we go back? Yes, but probably not at a busy lunchtime and if we’re in the neighborhood.

Tell us what you think in the comment section below. We welcome your opinions and feedback. That’s the great thing about food, all tastes are different!

Have Fun. Eat Well.

I too have not been as impressed with Rogers the last few times I've gone. I much prefer Woodstone, whose owner is the original "Roger." I think the food there which is almost identical to Rogers, is tastier. But, as with everything else, to each his own!

My family and I used to eat at Rogers regularly but the last few times we went there we found the food to be just so-so in quality. I heard a rumor they had changed hands so maybe this is what lead to the decline in the quality of the food? Whatever the reason, it's not as good as it used to be and quite frankly overrated as a result. The table service has always been indifferent. I realize that it's a high volume restaurant but would it kill them to smile once in awhile? So between the so-so food there these days and the always indifferent staff, Rogers is no longer a must-do for me.

We have been to rodgers many times at different times, and i have to say it has been about a year since we have gone, as we try to eliminate buffets from our diets, but Rodgers is the ony buffet we will go to, and the last time we went we noticed there seem to be somewhat of a change in the food not as good as it had been in the past, but Rodgers still remains to be our favorite BBQ restaurant around!
